Dr. Alexandre Joosten graduaded from medical school at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2008. He subsequently went on to receive his training in anesthesiology at CHU Brugmann, from which he graduated in 2013.

He then started practicing in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesia at CUB Erasme in Brussels. In February 2014, he decided to diversify his professional knowledge and skills with a 1 year research fellowship at the University of California, Irvine, USA with Dr. Maxime Cannesson as his personal mentor.  There, he worked as a leading member of his research team on goal directed therapy strategies and how to implement this concept at the bedside.

His others interests include noninvasive cardiac output monitoring devices, fluid therapy (crystalloid vs colloid debate), and many other novel perioperative technologies.

Dr. Joosten’s main research currently focuses on testing the impact of perioperative hemodynamic optimization using multiple closed-loop systems on postoperative outcome of patients undergoing high risk surgery.

Arnaud Steyaert, MD, is an anesthesiologist and pain physician working at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels, where his clinical activities include anesthesia for abdominal surgery and pain medicine.

His clinical and scientific focus has been postoperative pain management and, more particularly, the transition of acute to chronic postoperative pain, its mechanisms and the ways to predict and prevent it. He wrote several literature reviews on the topic in high-impact journals and has investigated predictive factors of persistent pain after breast cancer surgery. He has also collaborated on several fundamental, translational and clinical research projects.

Currently, he is working on a PhD exploring the clinical potential of new neuromodulation techniques for postoperative pain management.

Dr. Vutskits received his medical degree from the Semmelweis University of Medicine in Budapest Hungary. He then completed a PhD in the field of developmental neurobiology at the University of Geneva Medical School followed by an anesthesiology residency at the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Intensive Care at the University Hospitals of Geneva.

After his residency training, he turned toward a specialization in pediatric anesthesia. Parallel to his clinical training, he continued his basic science and translational research activity and is the principal investigator of a research group at the interface of the Departments of Anesthesiology and Fundamental Neurosciences at the University of Geneva Medical School.

Dr. Vutskits currently serves as the Head of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Intensive Care at the University Hospital of Geneva. He also acts as the Scientific Chair of European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology. He is an Editor of Anesthesiology and a Section Editor of Pediatric Anesthesia.

Dr. Nick Fletcher is the immediate past President of the Association for Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care (ACTACC) in the UK. He was a council member of the British Society of Echocardiography and he has been involved with perioperative TOE and critical care echocardiography and ultrasound training and accreditation in the UK and Europe. He is currently one of the ESICM steering group for advanced echo accreditation (EDEC) and is a member of the EACTA echocardiography committee. He has lectured widely in Europe, Asia, Africa and the USA and published many scholarly chapters and articles about anaesthesia and critical care ultrasound and is a member of the editorial boards of the journals BJA Education and Echocardiography Research and Practice..

Dr Nuala Lucas is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Northwick Park Hospital. Her specific interest is obstetric anaesthesia.

She serves as Chair of the Education Sub-committee of the Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association. She is the anaesthetic co-lead for the maternal confidential death enquiries in the UK (MBRRACE-UK). She is a senior editor for the International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia.

Her research interests include complications of obstetric anaesthesia; she is a co-investigator on the UKOSS study of high regional block in obstetrics and the DREAMY project, a prospective evaluation of accidental awareness in obstetric general anaesthesia.

Our research work has generated several publications by exploring better ways to optimize drug administration and measure anesthetic drug effects.

Dr Philippe Gautier is head of the department of Anaesthesiology at the Clinique Ste Anne - St Remi in Brussels, Belgium. He graduated in 1985 as a medical doctor at the University of Louvain, Brussels. He completed his five-year training in anaesthesiology at the same university and spent an extra year specializing in regional anaesthesia under the patronage of Prof Albert Vansteenberge.

His attention is focused on obstetric anaesthesia, the pharmacodynamics of alpha 2 agonists and new local anaesthetics. More recently, his interests also include local anaesthetic spread of nerve blocks. He has focused his attention on ultrasound in regional anaesthesia and advanced techniques as paravertebral, Lumbar plexus blocks …

Dr Gautier has published extensively in different fields of regional anaesthesia in peer-reviewed journals He has been involved in most of the projects of the Bara since its foundation and actually takes part in several obstetrical programs in foreign countries. He is also ESRA Board member.

Professor Robert Sneyd was brought up in Cornwall and one of his first jobs was as a Nursing Auxiliary in Devonport Hospital, Plymouth - now long since demolished! He graduated from Cambridge University in 1981 and continued his medical training in London. Half way through he undertook a research degree and then spent a period working full time in the pharmaceutical industry before returning to work in the NHS.

After completing his UK anaesthetic training he worked at the University of Michigan Medical School at Ann Arbor, USA. In 1993, he returned to the South West as a Consultant Anaesthetist and after a few years moved to the University as Reader in Anaesthesia and then Professor. In 1998 he took over the running of the Plymouth Postgraduate Medical School, first as Acting Dean and then as Dean. He led the Plymouth team in the successful bid for a new Peninsula Medical School and served as Vice-Dean of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.

The first medical graduates have been working as NHS doctors since 1st August 2007 and the dental graduates have been doing so since 2011. He worked as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Derriford Hospital, mostly in neuro-anaesthesia and is very familiar with the interface between universities and the NHS.

Professor Sneyd's research interests focus on drugs, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics with related projects based on signal processing. Having worked in the pharmaceutical industry he has a special interest in drug development, especially in Intravenous Anaesthesia. Until July 2018 he was Dean of the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry in Plymouth, UK and led programmes in medicine and dentistry.

In anaesthesia he has engaged nationally through AAGBI (Council 2006-9, Vice-President 2009-11) and the Royal College of Anaesthetists, UK where he was Vice-President (2011-2012) and internationally with the European Society of Anaesthesiology, ESA as a Director. In each case he has tried to represent the interests of patients and clinicians with an emphasis on sound strategy and common sense. Roles on external bodies
